Drais is a district of the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital Mainz .

With around 3,100 inhabitants and an area of 308 hectares, it is the city's smallest district. Drais was incorporated into a new district in 1969 along with five other suburbs . Drais is located on a hill above Mainz and is located in the southwest of the city. Drais is mainly characterized by fruit and vegetable cultivation ( cherries , asparagus , strawberries ). Drais is a popular place to live due to its far-sighted location.

Neighboring districts and municipalities

The following municipalities or districts of Mainz border the Drais in a clockwise direction:

in the north Mainz-Gonsenheim , in the east Mainz-Bretzenheim , in the south-east Mainz-Lerchenberg , in the south-west Ober-Olm and in the west Mainz-Finthen .

history

The earliest traces of settlement go back to the Hallstatt period (850–450 BC). A continuous settlement did not come about until around the year 1000 after clearing in the area of the former royal forest, today's Ober-Olmer Forest . The place was under King Konrad III. on August 24, 1149 first mentioned as a trip . In the Middle Ages, Drais belonged to the Electoral Mainz Office of Olm. After belonging to France and the Département du Mont-Tonnerre from 1797 to 1814, Drais was assigned to the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt and from 1835 belonged to the Mainz district. On June 7th 1969 the history of Drais ended as an independent village with the incorporation into the city of Mainz.

The development of the various new building areas is causing increasing population numbers and changing the character of the district from a predominantly rural village to a residential suburb. Apart from a few shops for local food supplies and the like, the district has only a few business settlements.

Coat of arms and name development

The place name Drais is probably derived from the Gothic driusan , the term for "bubbling springs". The derivation of Driesch , the Old High German term for "undeveloped land" can also be found occasionally.

In the two-part local coat of arms , the golden Peter key can be seen on a blue background. The lower part of the coat of arms shows a red jagged line on a yellow background.

Jesuit Court

The former cloister courtyard of the Hirzenach Propstei in Drais became the property of the Jesuit order in 1670 , who settled in Drais. After the order was dissolved in 1773, the building from the Baroque period in Seminarstrasse was given over to private hands and since January 14, 2002 has housed the stationary Christophorus Hospice on the ground floor.

Catholic Church "Maria Königin"

In 1737 the church was rebuilt with the support of the Jesuit Order, as the previous building was only partially usable since the Thirty Years War . The church has a baroque altar with a wooden relief from 1740. A so-called “plague cloth” from 1632 is attached to the north wall below the gallery, which is likely to be related to the devastating epidemic between 1632 and 1635. A skull with crossed bones is embroidered on this silk scarf with gold thread. The Latin inscription reads: VIVIT POST FUNERA VIRTUS (Virtue lives after death).

The organ on the west gallery was built in 1873 by the organ builder Johann Schlaad ( Waldlaubersheim ). The instrument was last restored in 1987 by the organ building company Vleugels (Hardheim), which also reversed changes made in the meantime and returned the organ to its original sound condition. With the exception of the reconstructed Salicional, the pipe material has been preserved in its original form. The abrasive loading instrument has nine register on a manual work (Cf 3 : Bourdon 16 ', Principal 8', Grossgedackt 8 ', Salicional 8', Octave 4 ', Flötgedackt 4', Superoctave 2 ', mixture III 1 1 / 3 ') and pedal (Cg 0 : Subbass 16 ') and has a pedal coupler .
