Gerd Rupprecht

Gerd Rupprecht (* 1944 ) is a German archaeologist . Until March 2012 he was state archaeologist for Rhineland-Palatinate . Since August 1, 2007, he has been Deputy Director of the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate .

Rupprecht studied Roman provincial archeology at the University of Frankfurt , where he received his doctorate in 1972/73. Since 1980 he has worked for the State Monuments Office of Rhineland-Palatinate in Mainz.

Gerd Rupprecht's main focus is on provincial Roman archeology ( epigraphy , architecture and handicrafts). As part of long-term projects, he deals with Latin inscriptions from Rheinhessen and the Nahe area , fortifications, sieges, defenses and storeys, as well as the excavation, research and presentation of large Roman buildings in Mainz (→ Mogontiacum ). His first major activity in Mainz was salvaging Roman ships in the early 1980s . As part of the last-mentioned field of activity, Rupprecht was significantly involved in the excavation and research of the sanctuary of Isis and Mater Magna and the Roman city gate with remains of the late antique city wall on the Kästrich in Mainz.

In 2004 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon , in 2011 the silver Cross of Honor of the Bundeswehr .
