Niederheimbach is a municipality in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Rhein-Nahe Association , which has its administrative headquarters in the city of Bingen am Rhein . Niederheimbach has been part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002 .
geography
Niederheimbach is located between Koblenz and Bingen directly on the Middle Rhine , just a little northwest of the knee of the Rhine . The place, which is located below or east of the Binger Wald , extends with its built-up area to 80 to 140 m above sea level. NHN ; the highest mountain in the municipality is the Franzosenkopf ( 617.1 m above sea level ), which is located south of the village in the Niederheimbach forest.
Niederheimbach also includes the residential areas Burg Hohneck (Heimburg), Burg Sooneck , Landgut Farm and Finkenhof.
history
Heimbach was first mentioned in a document dated June 14, 983, in which Emperor Otto II confirmed his rights under the spell of Bingen to Archbishop Willigis of Mainz .
Nieder-Heimbach was formerly part of the Mainz cathedral chapter . Above the village lies the ruins of Heimburg Castle, which was given as pledge to the spa administrator Kuno II von Falkenstein in 1353 and returned to the Archbishopric of Mainz in 1362 . The time of its decline is unknown. Not far from the village are the Sooneck or Saneck Castle , which was built at the very tip of the Soon or Sanwald . In 1282 when a robbery was destroyed on the orders of Emperor Rudolf, it was later rebuilt and handed over to the von Waldeck family of knights. This was in 1346 by Archbishop Heinrich III. von Virneburg enfeoffed with it and died out around 1450.

Local mayor is Ole Wysotzki (FWG). In the local elections on May 26, 2019, he was elected with a share of 61.79% of the vote and is the successor to Heinz Wagner, who no longer took office after 15 years.

A partnership has existed since 1981 with the former municipality of Champtoceaux from France, now Orée d'Anjou .
Culture and sights
Buildings
- Sooneck Castle (also called Saneck or Sonneck) stands on a steep slope of the Soonwald above the community. It can be viewed on guided tours.
- Heimburg , (also called Hoheneck Castle) is located above the community. Today the castle is privately owned and cannot be visited.
- Siebenburgenblick observation tower, a 9.6 m high wooden tower , which was built above Sooneck Castle directly on the Rheinburgenweg long-distance hiking trail . From the 8.5 m high viewing platform you have a view of the Rhine Valley and seven castles in the area

Fairytale grove
Until it was closed in the 1980s, the Märchenhain was a tourist attraction. Most of the fairy tale characters have been restored and have found their new place on an idyllic path near the village. Fairy-tale characters such as Little Red Riding Hood , Hansel and Gretel and many others can now be seen in their new splendor on the “Kuhweg” and in the castle gardening facility.
Regular events
- On the weekend before the Assumption of Mary (August 15), the Bratwurst Curb is held from Friday to Tuesday.
- Rhine in flames on the 1st Saturday in July: large fireworks and boat tour on the Middle Rhine from Trechtingshausen with Reichenstein Castle , along Rheinstein Castle , Assmannshausen , Mäuseturm , ruins of Ehrenfels Castle (Hesse) , Bingen am Rhein with Klopp Castle to Rüdesheim am Rhein with the Brömserburg .
societies
- The "Verkehrsverein Niederheimbach eV" (VVN for short) was founded as early as 1924. Its members work on a voluntary basis to beautify the townscape and are the local contact for tourists. The VVN also looks after the hiking trails around Niederheimbach.
- On September 6, 2015, the association “Dorfmuseum Heimbachtal e. V ”in the apartment on the first floor of Niederheimbach train station there is a small museum about the history of the place.

The public utility Mainz AG planning the construction of the head on the French above Niederheimbach pumped storage power plant "Heimbach memory" with an output between 400 and 600 MW.
traffic
- The federal road 9 runs directly through the municipality . a. Mainz connects with Koblenz.
- The federal motorway 61 is reached after approx. 13 km at the junction Rheinböllen .
- Niederheimbach train station is on the left bank of the Rhine .
- A car ferry connects the community with Lorch on the other side of the Rhine.
