geography
Welgesheim is located in Rheinhessen between Mainz and Bad Kreuznach .
history
Welgesheim is located at the point where the old Heerstraße used to cross the Wiesbach . During excavation work, several grave sites were uncovered, which suggest a Roman settlement on the soil of the current district. The place "Wellingesheim" itself was first mentioned in the year 770 in the Lorsch Codex . In 874 it appears under the name "Willengisheim" and in 1178 as "Wellengesheim". It appears under its current name around the year 1194, when Werner von Bolanden received the church treasure of Welgesheim as a fief from Count Lon. Welgesheim later belonged to the rulership of the Count Palatine near Rhine , with whom the place remained until the end of the 18th century. Under Napoléon Bonaparte , Welgesheim in the Département du Mont-Tonnerre (Donnersberg) belonged to France from 1801 to 1814 with the corresponding laws such as B. the Code civil . As a result of the Congress of Vienna (1815), the later Rhine-Hessian areas of Hessen-Darmstadt were awarded. Welgesheim belonged to the Grand Duchy of Hesse , which was surrounded by the Bavarian Rhine District (Palatinate) in the south, the Prussian administrative district of Koblenz in the west and the Duchy of Nassau in the north. This was the case for a hundred years until the Grand Duchy of Hesse was dissolved in the course of Germany's defeat in World War I. From then on, the province of Rheinhessen belonged to the People's State of Hesse , which existed until 1945. After the Second World War , Welgesheim came to the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate in 1946 , to which it still belongs today, in the Mainz-Bingen district.
