history
The first documented mention of the place Sörgenloch comes from the year 1190. Little is known about the early history of the place, in the 13th century the monastery of Sankt Alban in Mainz probably owned the local authority over Sörgenloch.
Origin of name
The name Sörgenloch developed from the term “Saligenloh”, which dates back to Roman times and is made up of the Latin “salis” (= pasture ) and Old High German “Loh” (= forest). The name means “willow forest”.
The following variations of the place name were common in the past:
- Sulegloch (1190)
- Surgenloch (1200)
- Sulgeloch and Sörgenloch (1293)
- Selgenloch (1432)
Early days
In 1880 an iron hoe and two vessels were found that date from the Iron Age and suggest that Celts had already settled in the area of today's Sörgenloch. Remains of a vangion settlement were also found.
In the 19th century, several coin and grave finds from Roman times were made while clearing the vineyards . These finds are kept in the Worms Museum. The field name "Hundertmorgen" also refers to a Roman settlement, as 100 acres was the amount of land that a Roman soldier received after his service.
Sörgenloch belonged to the Franconian Urmark "Olm". When settlements were formed around the courtyards where churches stood, the towns of Ober-Olm , Nieder-Olm , Klein-Winternheim and Sörgenloch emerged in the Mark Olm . As a demarcation and fortification, the places received earth walls , which were reinforced by a hedge . Field names like "Oberheck" and "Im Bock" (from Bock = to bend a hedge) refer to this time. A burial ground from this period (6th and 7th centuries) was found just above Sörgenloch .
Religions
Sörgenloch is a place of pilgrimage . The population is predominantly Roman Catholic .
Pilgrimage
Sörgenloch celebrates a Marian pilgrimage on September 8th ( Mary's birth ) . During the Palatinate War of Succession in the 17th century, the Sörgenloch had to leave the village and hide in the area. The image of grace is a clay sculpture, created on the Middle Rhine around 1420. It shows Our Lady sitting on a bench and playing with the Jesus boy in a soft style . To save the church's statue of Mary , they buried it outside the village. When the war ended, no one could remember the exact place where the statue was buried. The Sörgenloch people prayed to God that he would reveal the place to them. There was an apparition over a meadow near the Selz and it was there that the statue was found buried. Since then, a pilgrimage to Sörgenloch has been celebrated for the birth of Mary. On the Sunday after September 8th, St. Mary is commemorated with a service and a procession through Sörgenloch and the statue of the Virgin is carried through the streets.
