history
The history of the place goes back to the 9th century, where the spellings Lucida (818), Lusida (1216) and Lude (1220) can be found. The name Ludes can come from Ludus (“game”) or from Lucus (“crowned wood”), possibly also from Lux (“light”). Saint Vincent de Paul preached there in 1645. The Duke of Lorraine burned the city in 1652. Ludes-le-Coquet is a historical place name that was taken up again by the Ludéens in the early 19th century. Just a few years ago, the residents persistently earned this title again.
The Ludes wine was once highly valued because it is one of the best in the Montagne de Reims. Its reputation goes back to the reign of Henry IV and spread to England and Russia.
From the Middle Ages onwards, Ludes was an important village that belonged to noble families. Several lords had ownership of and rights to Ludes. The property rights were easily sold from one family to another without affecting the residents in any way.
