Cormicy was a highly competitive sector during the First World War, particularly with the hill of Sapigneul overlooking the passage of the river and canal. Sapigneul, a small hamlet of Cormicy, was completely destroyed during the battle. The city itself was completely destroyed in 1918 and ultimately liberated by the French 418th Infantry Regiment.
One of the five major national military cemeteries was established in the Blue House in the 1920s and collected the bodies of more than 14,000 French soldiers.
