history

The first airfield in Europe during the 1909 Air Show

Nomad tribes founded numerous villages around Reims in the 2nd century BC, including Bétheny. In the 2nd century AD, the village was farmed by the lower Roman nobility and was called Betheneium or Betiniacum. In 1870 part of the village was torn down to make way for the newly created town of La Neuvillette (incorporated into Reims in 1970). At that time, most of the residents lived on agriculture. 95% of the area was used for agriculture. After 1870, many immigrants settled in the city and worked as textile workers in Reims.

The town is still particularly proud of a large parade of maneuvers on September 19, 1901 on the occasion of the visit of Tsar Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra, in which 150,000 soldiers were involved. In 1909 the first European airfield was opened on the maneuvering area on the outskirts . From August 22nd to 29th, 1909, the first international aviation exhibition took place there with 200,000 visitors. The airfield formed the base of the Reims-Champagne military airfield , which opened in 1928 and closed in 2012.

During the First World War , the front between the Germans and the French ran just 300 meters from the city limits. Bétheny was destroyed, the inhabitants fled and did not return until the end of the war.

Since July 2014, the municipality has hosted the Stade Reims' training and education center for footballers .
