history

Recent administrative reforms

The local community of Dannstadt-Schauernheim was created on June 7, 1969 through the merger of the local communities of Dannstadt and Schauernheim .

History of Dannstadt

Roman eight-god stone from Dannstadt, today the Palatinate History Museum, Speyer

To the south of the village is the nature reserve "Dannstadter Gräberfeld" , with numerous Celtic barrows , mostly from the third stage of the Hallstatt period and the Latène period . (approx. 850 BC to 350 BC)

At the church of Dannstadt in 1825 there was a large Roman eight-god stone (around 250 AD), walled in from the base of a giant column of Jupiter . It later came to the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer and is exhibited there in the Roman collection. Its original location is unclear, but it certainly comes from the immediate vicinity and is likely to indicate a Roman settlement in the area.

Dannstadt was probably founded in the 7th century by Franconian settlers and was first mentioned in a document from the Weißenburg monastery , which can be assigned to the year 767 at the latest, as "Dendestat", then in June 769 in the Lorsch Codex as "Dantistat".

As part of the Franconian tribal duchy and later of the German kingdom, Dannstadt remained directly in the Landvogtei Speyer until it was pledged to Count Palatine Rudolf II and Ruprecht I in 1331 by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian . Dannstadt remained in Electoral Palatinate ownership until 1797, when it was annexed to France .

A low-nobility family resided in Dannstadt, whose members named themselves after the place. The most famous representative is Jeckel von Dannstadt († 1427), electoral Palatinate land clerk and mayor in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse . His grave plate adorned with coat of arms stands today in the paradise of the local collegiate church , in which he was also buried.

During the so-called French period in the wake of the French Revolution , Dannstadt, like Schauernheim, was part of France , first of the Republic, then of the French Empire (in fact since 1792, legally since 1797), and belonged to the canton of Mutterstadt in the Speyer arrondissement of the Donnersbergdepartements . After the end of French rule (1814), Dannstadt belonged to the Bavarian Rhine District from 1816 , which was later renamed "Rheinpfalz", and from 1818 to the Landkommissariat Speyer within the Rhine District . In 1886 the place was assigned to the newly formed Ludwigshafen district office, from which the Ludwigshafen am Rhein district emerged in 1939 , today part of the Rhein-Pfalz district .

History of Schauernheim

Schauernheim is probably a Franconian foundation of the 6./7. Century and was first mentioned on April 11, 768 in a document in the Lorsch Codex in the form "Scurheim". The current name developed from the forms "Schurheim" and "Schuwerheim" and is first documented in 1649.

In 1281 Schauernheim came into the possession of the Dominican Convent of Lambrecht through a donation , which was dissolved in 1551, making Schauernheim an Electoral Palatinate property. In that year Schauernheim was assigned as a benefice of the University of Heidelberg , which remained the local ruler until 1791.

The history of Schauernheim since the French Revolution corresponds to that of Dannstadt, with which it was finally united in 1969.

Population development

Dannstadt

The first information on the population of Dannstadt is from the second half of the 16th century. From then until the beginning of the 18th century the number remained constant at a maximum of 200 to 250 inhabitants. During the 18th century it rose to a level of 550 in 1790 due to resettlement after the Palatinate War of Succession and population growth. Immigration as a result of the dissolution of feudal ties in 1797 had the effect of doubling to around 1000 inhabitants by 1840. By 1880 the number rose only moderately to 1200; the local borders were not expanded during this time. After that, the population began to rise again. Also due to the construction of the branch line Dannstadt – Ludwigshafen, the place expanded in a northerly direction and in 1940 numbered about 2000 people. After the Second World War , large new building areas were created in the north and west, and the population rose from 2,600 in 1960 to 4,568 in 1988.

Schauernheim

In Schauernheim, too, an increase in population did not begin until the 18th century, as in Dannstadt due to immigration after 1797, which increased the population from 340 in 1810 to 526 in 1848. The highest population level in the 19th century was reached in 1870 with 580 people. Until the First World War , the place did not expand. In the 1920s / 1930s and also after the Second World War, apartments were primarily built for workers and employees in Ludwigshafen and Mannheim; for this purpose, new development areas were developed in the north and west. In 1960 the population was 958, in 1988 it was 2,219.
