Viergötterstein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Viergötterstein is the modern name for the base of Jupiter's giant columns, which is decorated on all sides with gods . The term comes from provincial Roman archeology .

On the sides of the stone bears the image of the four venerated gods - mostly Juno , Mercurius , Minerva and Hercules . Sandstone was often used as a material , which is why the state of preservation is often not particularly good. The base of the stones is not always exactly square; two sides of the stone shown here are slightly wider.
