history

The Koninklijk Geschied- en Oudheidkundig Genootschap van Tongeren (Royal Society of History and Antiquity of Tongeren) founded a collection of archaeological finds from the city and the surrounding area in the 19th century. From 1854, parts of this collection were on public display in the city. In 1937 the Provincial Museum opened its collections in the Beguinage in Hasselt , where the most important pieces from Tongeren were also shown.

However, these returned to the newly created museum in Tongeren in 1954. Donations and the finds from excavations by the museum's archaeologists and the Belgian national excavation service added to the collection. Finds on the history of the Eburones under King Ambiorix are exhibited .
