Gerhard Bauchhenß

Gerhard Bauchhenß (born September 30, 1942 in Würzburg ) is a German classical archaeologist who mainly deals with Roman provincial art .

life and work

Gerhard Bauchhenß studied classical archeology at the University of Würzburg , where he received his doctorate in 1973 under Erika Simon with a thesis on the Jupiter giant columns in the Roman province of Germania Superior . He then worked as a research assistant at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn until his retirement , where he was responsible for editing the museum's publications, including the Bonn yearbooks .

Gerhard Bauchhenß's research interests are in provincial Roman art, especially stone sculpture. In this context he wrote four volumes of the Corpus Signorum Imperii Romani . For the Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae he wrote numerous articles on the representation of ancient deities in the western Roman provinces. He is working on a documentation of all known matron names . Bauchenß is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .
