Erika Simon

Erika Simon (born June 27, 1927 in Rheingönheim ; † February 15, 2019 in Würzburg ) was a German classical archaeologist . From 1964 until her retirement she held the chair for Classical Archeology at the University of Würzburg .

Live and act

Erika Simon, daughter of a horticultural architect, graduated from the humanistic grammar school in Aschaffenburg in 1947 . From 1947 to 1952 she studied Classical Archeology, Classical Philology and German Studies at the Universities of Heidelberg and Munich . She passed the first and second state exams for teaching in 1951/1952. With Reinhard Herbig , she received her doctorate in 1952 in Heidelberg with a study on sacrificing gods . In 1952/53 she received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute for her dissertation . From 1953 to 1958 she was Roland Hampe's assistant at the University of Mainz , where she qualified as a professor in 1957 . In 1959 she completed her rehabilitation in Heidelberg . There she taught as an adjunct professor at the Archaeological Institute until 1963 . In 1964 she became full professor of classical archeology at the University of Würzburg and director of the antique collection of the Martin von Wagner Museum ; In 1994 she retired. Then they had several guest professorships, among others, in Aberdeen , Durban , Vienna, Australia, Tallahassee , Austin and Baltimore .

Your list of publications had almost 400 publications up to 2013. In her research, Simon dealt with the iconography of the Greeks and Romans, especially the gods, with Greek vases and image programs of Roman art (for example the Augustus statue of Prima Porta and the Ara Pacis ). Her research on Etruscology is also considered to be groundbreaking . She was instrumental in the development of the Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae (LIMC).

Simon was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute , a corresponding member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences (since 1978), the Scientific Society at the University of Frankfurt am Main, the British Academy (since 2001), the American Philosophical Society (since 2002) and honorary member of numerous Institute (including the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies in London ) and honorary doctorates from the University of Thessaloniki and the University of Athens (2006).

For her services to science, Erika Simon has been honored with numerous awards, including the Golden Athos Cross of the Order of St. Mark of the Patriarchate of Alexandria , the Ernst Hellmut Vits Prize of the University of Münster, the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon , the medal Pro meritis scientiae et litterarum of the Bavarian Ministry of Culture and the Bavarian Order of Merit .
