Harald Mielsch

Harald Mielsch (born June 11, 1944 in Baden-Baden ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Harald Mielsch studied in Bonn and Rome from 1963 to 1970 the subjects Classical Archeology, Classical Philology and Ancient History. In 1970 he received his doctorate in Bonn with the work Roman stucco reliefs. On the development of the Roman wall and ceiling stucco . From 1974 to 1977 he was assistant at the Rome branch of the German Archaeological Institute and from 1977 to 1985 assistant at the Free University of Berlin . In 1984 he completed his habilitation in classical archeology at the Free University of Berlin. Mielsch taught from 1985 to 1994 as a professor of classical archeology at the University of Würzburg . From 1994 to 2009 he was Professor of Classical Archeology at theUniversity of Bonn .

His main areas of work include antique bronze work, Roman wall painting and, in general, furnishing antique houses and graves. He also deals specifically with the Vatican necropolis and the relationship between humans and animals in antiquity. Mielsch has been a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute since 1984, a full member since 1996, and a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 2005 . Until 2009 Mielsch was chairman of the Verein von Altertumsfreunde im Rheinlande e. V. (AV). His successor was Winfried Schmitz, an ancient historian from Bonn . Mielsch is now a member of the board.
