Winfried Schmitz

Winfried Schmitz (born July 17, 1958 in Cologne ) is a German ancient historian .

In 1977 he began to study Ancient History , Medieval and Modern History and Classical Archeology at the University of Cologne . In 1988 he moved to the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , where he graduated in 1985 with a doctorate in ancient history. He then worked from 1985 to 1989 as a research assistant with Hans-Joachim Gehrke at the Free University of Berlin . From 1989 to 1991 Schmitz worked as a research volunteer at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn . In 1995 he completed his habilitation at the University of Freiburg. In 1995/96 he was deputy professor in Freiburg and Münster . From October 1996 he was a professor at the University of Bochum (representing the area of ancient history with a focus on Greek history ) and since 1998 as a professor at the University of Bielefeld .

He has been teaching at the University of Bonn since 2003 (as a professor from 2005) . His main research interests are social history (rural structures in ancient Greece , historical family research ) and early Christian epigraphy (especially in the Rhine-Moselle region). On behalf of the Roman-Germanic Museum Cologne, he worked on, among other things, the late antique and early Christian grave inscriptions of the city of Cologne from the 4th to 7th centuries AD. Since 2010, he has headed the research project on ancient slavery at the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz . The project, launched in 1950, was officially completed in 2016. The keystone of the project is the concise dictionary on ancient slavery with around 1000 headwords.

Schmitz has been chairman of the Association of Friends of Antiquities in the Rhineland in Bonn since 2009 and thus successor to Harald Mielsch and since 2011 a full member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz .
