Hanns Gabelmann (born December 26, 1936 in Stuttgart , † September 5, 1996 in Bonn ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Hanns Gabelmann first studied at the Philipps University of Marburg , where Friedrich Matz became his first important academic teacher. He received his doctorate in 1963 with studies on the early Greek lion image . He then went to the Saarland University as a research assistant for three years and finally in 1966 to the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . There he completed his habilitation in 1971 with the work The Workshop Groups of Upper Italian Sarcophagi . Afterwards, Gabelmann was initially a scientific adviser . In 1973 he was appointed to the newly created second chair for Classical Archeology in Bonn and has now taught alongside Nikolaus Himmelmann for over 20 years . With his studies, which sought to combine artistic and historical aspects, he founded his own important archaeological school. Many domestic and foreign students were among his students. He is considered one of the first archaeologists to include geodesy in academic teaching.

Gabelmann initially researched primarily on Greek art history. Since the early 1960s, his interest in Roman monuments grew more and more. In particular, he devoted himself to the Roman provincial legacies. Here he was particularly concerned with Gallo-Roman art and the development of medieval art from ancient art as well as grave structures and grave sculptures. Most recently, he conducted research on the iconography of the Roman state and grave reliefs. In his academic teaching he covered the entire period from Homeric Greece to late antiquity .
