The HGL was founded in 1970 in Wuppertal.

The working group organized around 50 special exhibitions, which could be seen in Breslau, Düsseldorf, Königswinter, Liegnitz, Siegburg and Görlitz, among others. In some cases, there was cooperation with German and Polish museums.

In its scientific work, the working group is not limited to museum tasks, but also works on annual editions published by the HGL. Inquiries that can be answered by the archive of historical books and documents are also processed.

history

In 1952/53 the city of Wuppertal took on the sponsorship of the expelled German citizens from the Liegnitz region. Biennial sponsorship meetings were organized, to which Liegnitzer came from all over Germany to Wuppertal. In the course of time they brought with them cultural memorabilia from Silesia. These were first collected and exhibited in a room in the town hall . The numerous objects over time could no longer be adequately accommodated in the town hall, so the board of the BGL and the sponsorship committee tried to find a more suitable accommodation. This was found in one of the two Haspel houses on Friedrich-Engels-Allee , which were renovated until 1980. On March 5, 1979, the city council decided that the collection should be housed rent-free on one floor of the building complex, which was ceremoniously opened there on September 20, 1980 in the presence of Lord Mayor Gottfried Gurland .

The connection between the two cities was strengthened in 1993 through a city partnership .

The collection was housed on Friedrich-Engels-Allee until 2008, but the premises there were needed for other purposes, so the collection had to move. In the Vohwinkel town hall, two rooms were provided on the first floor where the collection has been on view since the beginning of 2009.
