Life

Georg Thebesius was a son of the Liegnitzer pastor of the same name. After attending the Liegnitz city school, he studied law and history at the University of Wittenberg from 1654 . He then continued his studies at the University of Strasbourg , where he received his doctorate in law on February 15, 1660 . After a study tour through France, England and the Reich , he returned to Liegnitz, where he was employed as a town clerk in 1664 and was promoted to the council in 1667. Three years later he was appointed syndic.

With the death of Duke Georg Wilhelm I , the Liegnitz branch of the Silesian Piasts went out in 1675. As a result, the duchies of Liegnitz, Brieg and Wohlau fell to the Crown of Bohemia as settled fiefdoms . Subsequently, Georg Thebesius was used by the Bohemian sovereign to set up the new administrative structures in the hereditary principality of Liegnitz.

He made particular merits with the writing of a chronicle about the city of Liegnitz and the Piastic dukes of Liegnitz, Brieg and Wohlau. It was only printed in Jauer in 1733 . Its full title reads: “Weyland George Thebesii JUD Notarii Syndici and the schools Praesidis zu Liegnitz.
