Matthias Steinhart
Matthias Steinhart (born April 17, 1966 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German classical archaeologist .
Live and act
Matthias Steinhart studied after visiting the humanistic Scheffel-Gymnasium in Lahr from 1985 to 1994 - since 1988 as a fellow of the studienstiftung - at the University of Bonn and the University of Würzburg Classical Archeology, Greek philology and ancient history. In 1990 he received his master's degree, and his doctorate with the dissertation “The motif of the eye in Greek visual art” took place in 1994 with Erika Simon .
From mid-1998 to mid-2000, Steinhart was a research assistant at the Department of Ancient History at the University of Freiburg for the research project "Antiquities of Ithaca - an imaginary museum" by Hans-Joachim Gehrke and Eckhard Wirbelauer . This was followed by two more years as a research assistant at the same institute, now as a member of the sub-project B 1 “Roman imperial and regional identities and their interplay in the eastern Roman Empire” of the Collaborative Research Center 541 “Identities and Alterities. The Function of Alterity for the Constitution and Construction of Identity ”by the DFG. Steinhart dealt with the topic " Pausanias and the cultural identity of Greece in Roman times". During this time he completed his habilitation in 2001 at the University of Freiburg . From 2002 to 2005 Steinhart was a research assistant, 2005/06 academic councilor and since 2006 private lecturer at the Archaeological Institute of the University of Freiburg.
Since January 1st, 2008 Steinhart has been a curator at the Staatliche Antikensammlungen and Glyptothek Munich . On August 26, 2008 he was re-qualified at the University of Munich . Since December 1st, 2011 he has held the chair for Classical Archeology at the University of Würzburg. He was also head of the antiques department of the university's Martin von Wagner Museum until September 2014 . In 2014 he was elected to the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . Since 2015 he has been the head of archeology in the Classical Studies section of the Görres Society .
