Ulrich Sinn

Ulrich Sinn (born October 4, 1945 in Bevensen ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Ulrich Sinn graduated from high school Johanneum in Lüneburg in 1965 . After military service, he first studied education in Karlsruhe from 1967 to 1968 , then classical archeology , ancient history and art history , especially in Freiburg . During this time he took part in excavations in southern Italy and Greece and spent time studying in Athens and Olympia .

Sinn was founded by Walter-Herwig Schuchhardt in 1975 with a thesis on The 'Homeric' cups. PhD in Hellenistic relief ceramics from Macedonia . 1974/75 followed a one-year traineeship at the State Art Collections in Kassel . In 1975/76 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . From 1976 to 1979, Sinn was a consultant at the German Archaeological Institute, Athens Department , where, among other things, he participated in the excavations in the Heraion of Samos . From 1979 to 1984, Sinn was a research assistant at the Archaeological Institute of the University of Bonn . In 1982 he was elected a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute. Since 1985, Sinn has headed the international research project “ Olympia in the Roman Empire and Late Antiquity ” as part of the Olympic excavation of the German Archaeological Institute. In addition, there was teaching at various international institutions in Athens. In 1989, Sinn received his habilitation at the University of Bonn with the topic The Greek Shrines as Hikesie Sites . From 1992 to 1994, Sinn was Professor of Classical Archeology at the University of Augsburg , and from 1994 to 2011 he held the Chair of Classical Archeology at the University of Würzburg . Associated with this was the management of the antiquities collection of the Martin von Wagner Museum at the university. From 2003 to 2009, Sinn was Vice President of the University of Würzburg.

Sinn's main research interests are the functions, furnishings and topography of Greek sanctuaries, especially of Olympia, Greek architectural sculpture, cabaret and vase painting, ancient sports history and ancient architecture .

Sinn is married to the classical archaeologist Friederike Sinn .
