Hessisches Landesmuseum, on the right one of the two gate guard buildings (2005)

The Hessisches Landesmuseum is located at the exit of Kassel city center, directly at Wilhelmshöher Tor , on whose hexagonal structure the building is located. The museum was built according to plans by the architect Theodor Fischer and opened on 23 August 1913 for the millennium of the city of Kassel. The museum building and collections were closed from 2008 to 2016 due to renovation measures. In the immediate vicinity in the gate guard was a permanent exhibition on handicrafts from historicism to contemporary design, which was also closed until further notice.

The following collections were housed in the Hessian State Museum until 2008:

Astronomical-physical cabinet

The Astronomical-Physical Cabinet is located in the orangery on Karlsaue . The first work on the castle-like orangery began in 1702 under Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel . In the Second World War, the building was destroyed except for the outer walls. After it was rebuilt in the 1970s, as in the 19th century, it served as an exhibition building, especially for the documenta (which had previously used the ruins and the grounds). After the new construction of the documenta hall in 1992, the astronomical-physical cabinet with planetarium was able to move into the orangery and use most of the building for its permanent exhibition; until 2004 under the name Museum for Astronomy and History of Technology . The museum also houses a planetarium , the program of which is designed by the Kassel Astronomical Working Group.

The collection of the Astronomical-Physical Cabinet houses the exhibition areas of astronomy, clocks, geodesy, physics and mathematics / information technology from the late Renaissance to the industrial revolution . The creation of the collection is due to the continuous promotion of the natural sciences by the Hessian landgraves, but also to their passion for collecting curiosities. Among other things, second pendulum clocks, vacuum pumps, microscopes, electrifying machines, early calculating machines and quadrants are exhibited. The collection also includes a reconstruction of the Antikythera Mechanism .
