Caricatura
The Caricatura institution was founded in Kassel in 1984 as a non-profit organization. Since 1995 she has been running the Caricatura - gallery for comical art in the KulturBahnhof Kassel .
history
The Caricatura was founded in 1984 as a non-profit association. Especially in the documenta years since 1987, the Caricatura offers an alternative to these exhibitions when it presents well-known artists of contemporary comedy in cross-sectional exhibitions. The work of the Caricatura is influenced by the activities of the New Frankfurt School , and so FW Bernstein , Robert Gernhardt and FK Waechter were among the first sponsors in the early 1980s.
In November 1995 the Caricatura - gallery for comic art was opened in the KulturBahnhof Kassel as a simultaneous exhibition and event space for comic art . In at least five exhibitions per year, mostly current works from the fields of cartoon, caricature, picture history, comic, comic drawing and painting are shown. Funny art can also be seen live several times a year, at readings, concerts, cabaret evenings and other events. Furthermore, the Caricatura Shop complements the offer with an assortment of selected postcards, prints and books. All publications from the Caricatura Edition are also available here.
In August 2012, a poster designed by Mario Lars at the entrance to the Caricatura led to protests by several Christian churches. On August 22nd, a private complaint was filed against the artist according to § 166 StGB . Due to the protests, the artist had the poster removed on August 23.
Tasks and events
The Caricatura performs exhibition and event work on cartoon, caricature and comic art in the broadest sense. Well-known artists find a forum here. In the gallery operation, work shows, themed and collective exhibitions by and with the most famous current cartoonists, caricaturists and comic artists in Germany alternate on an area of approx. 250 m². In addition to five exhibitions per year, live events are regularly held on the gallery stage. The Caricatura Gallery's program of events includes readings of satirical and comic literature, cabaret and theater evenings as well as concerts. In cooperation with the Kassel Literature Foundation Brückner-Kühner, events have been held regularly since 1998, including the Kassel Komik Colloquium "12 hours to eternity" since 2000.
Caricatura traveling exhibitions
Individual projects are also offered and shown as traveling exhibitions. This offer is systematically expanded and managed by an affiliated agency. So far, thirteen exhibitions are in the repertoire, among others by Greser & Lenz , Til Mette , Martin Perscheid , Harm Bengen and TOM . Themed and collective exhibitions are also offered, including “One Goes - Cartoons and Caricatures for Life and Death” or “The Rejection Collection - The best cartoons that the New Yorker never printed”. The traveling exhibitions are also represented internationally in Austria, Switzerland and Paris.
Summer Academy for Comic Art
Since 2007 , the gallery has hosted the “Summer Academy for Comic Art”, a joint project with the Museum for Komische Kunst Frankfurt, the Fotter-Privat-Stiftung and the Titanic-Magazin . The aim of this project is to train and promote young draftsmen in a workshop.
The KulturBahnhof Kassel
Since 1995 Kassel's old main train station has been the “first cultural train station in Germany” (Deutsche Bahn AG). Caricatura played a leading role in the overall design. In 1997 the KulturBahnhof was a location of the documenta X and was one of the decentralized projects of the world exhibition Expo 2000 .
