Not funny comic series
Joscha Sauer

Since beginning his drawing activity in 2000, Sauer has published the majority of his cartoons freely accessible on his website nichtlustig.de .

In 2003 the first of the so far six non-funny books was published. These books contain many of the cartoons that have already been published on the homepage, some of which have been slightly revised, but also drawings specially designed for the books and some short stories that span multiple cartoons. From May 2006, Nichtlustig was also published in the former Swiss commuter newspaper heute , which was called Blick am Abend from 2008 until it was discontinued in print in spring 2019 . The publications on the website are no longer daily due to the other activities; the last cartoon published on the website is from the end of April 2015.

From 1999 to 2004 Joscha Sauer was part of the still active drawing group " Die Stricher ", which is concerned with the satirical magazine ZYN! had formed.

Since November 2008, Sauer has been publishing non-funny cartoons translated into English with notfunnycartoons.com .

The cartoons

Sauer has so far drawn and written over 1200 cartoons for the non-funny . The works are colored by hand with watercolor and then scanned and post-processed in a further step .

Many characters appear regularly at Notlustig , e.g. B. the suicidal lemmings , the yetis , the ninjas , dinosaurs , extraterrestrials or Mr. Riebmann, who lives in the wall. The scientists Wilson and Pickett also make regular appearances with their time travel . More recently, Fäkalini, the conjuring plumber or the plumbing magician, has also joined. Death, which initially only appeared sporadically, has developed into its own personality since it changed its image through the 'poodle of death'. Sauer let the figure of the child-guarding killer robot NF-700 die after a few episodes because, according to his own statement, it was simply too difficult to explain in a picture every time that it is a killer robot that would rather look after children than people to kill. The "Lemming Family" is a Lemming family. In contrast to the other lemmings, they have developed character traits. As an homage to Sauer's favorite film Back to the Future , all the clocks in the cartoons show the time 10:04, including digital clocks (which could also show 22:04 according to the logic of the film).

The characters often meet within a cartoon, which is why a comic often cannot be assigned to a single category.

Joscha Sauer also writes multi-page stories that are only published in books (from Non-Funny 2 ). These stories are also related to other books, but are self-contained.

The cartoons take up everyday and extraordinary situations and process them in a funny , sarcastic , ironic or cynical form.

According to Joscha Sauer, he is in the process of conceiving his Nichtlustig universe as a television series. He posted a video trailer for Nichtlustig 4 in his internet blog in September 2008, in which he and one of his friends and co-signers gave the characters their voices. Through a crowdfunding campaign in 2012, he was able to produce the first episode of an animated series that was released in May 2013.

The 20-minute short film by Joscha Sauer contains many elements from the cartoons. The clips are linked by the story.

Joscha Sauer also published several short clips that usually last around 30 seconds.

Some of the protagonists of the cartoons were available as merchandise on the website. In July 2015, Sauer announced that the on-site shop would be closed until further notice. The reason he gave was disagreements with the companies involved. A possible new opening is still unclear.

The cartoon series

On November 22, 2015, Sauer started the non-funny project on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter - the series! , in which he appealed for assistance to produce a non-funny cartoon series.

The project was structured in such a way that after every 110,000 euros a further episode was successfully financed. From 11,921 supporters, € 386,422 came together on Kickstarter, which, together with the crowdpilot support site, raised over € 440,000 and thus financed 6 episodes. During the project there was also a cinema tour through the cities of Munich , Cologne , Hamburg and Berlin , where Sauer and Haiko Hörnig presented the first two episodes to a cinema audience.

The first episode, Time Traveling Ducks , was immediately available to all supporters from one euro, all other episodes had to be unlocked with higher amounts. In addition to the consequences, seven stretch goals were achieved by the supporters. After successful funding on January 7, 2016, the second episode Octozilla was distributed to supporters by email on April 29, 2016. The live premiere via the Internet video portal YouTube also took place on April 29th.

Others

Sauer also directed the music video for Turner's Head in the Sky , released in 2000 . The video shows the lemmings known by Nichtlustig.
