The real lemmings ( Lemmus ) are a genus from the Lemmini tribe . Depending on the doctrine, there are three to five types:

Often the brown lemming and the pribilof lemming are assigned to the Siberian lemming as subspecies.

The species of this genus inhabit the arctic tundras . They are known for the migrations that they undertake due to the intermittent population pressures . These migrations and the sharp fluctuations in population density that were also observed led to a theory of “mass suicide” in Scandinavia. Although it is incorrect according to the current state of knowledge, it is still supported. The Disney "documentary" White Wilderness , which took up and recreated this theory, also contributed to this. The only truth is that many animals do not survive these migrations in search of new habitats.
