Peter Gaymann , pseudonym : P. GAY (born June 26, 1950 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German cartoonist , graphic artist and writer . Gaymann is one of the most popular and well-known German cartoonists. He illustrates the weaknesses of his characters with amiable humor and gentle wit.

Life

Peter Gaymann is one of several sons of a bookbinder and accountant, his mother comes from an agricultural background. He started drawing as a child. In 1970 he graduated from high school. He did military service from 1971 to 1972, but subsequently refused it. Gaymann studied social affairs in Freiburg and initially worked as a social pedagogue and art teacher. In 1975 he married. Gaymann has been a freelance cartoonist and illustrator since 1976. From 1978 he worked full-time as a social worker and gave drawing, painting and handicraft lessons. In the late 1970s he drew a series called Gaymanns Tierische Blätter for the local Badische Zeitung , which was very popular with readers.

In 1979 Gaymann's daughter was born. In 1984 he was named "P. GAY ”with the cartoon band“ Chicken Days ”. Two years later he moved to Rome , where his son was born in 1987.

By 2019, Gaymann had published almost 90 books. The chickens became his trademark and appear in books such as wellness chickens and chicken à la cartoon . But pigs and cats are also portrayed humorously by Gaymann. Other favorite subjects of the draftsman are travel, cooking and wine. His cartoons have appeared in Zeit -Magazin, Bunte , Regio Magazin , taz and maxima . Since 1990 the "Couple Problems" published in Brigitte have contributed to his popularity. His friend and publisher Siegfried Liebrecht made him one of the most successful German cartoonists by merchandising his chicken caricatures on books, posters and other things. Gaymann's professional role models are Tomi Ungerer , Sempé and FK Waechter .

From 1991 on Peter Gaymann lived as a freelance draftsman in Cologne-Sülz . He had previously lived in Italy for five years. Gaymann is married and has two children.

In 2000 he met his second wife Viktoria, who lived in Munich. Since 2017 he has lived with her in Schäftlarn near Lake Starnberg in an old inn.

Gaymann has been the ambassador of the Federal Children's Hospice Association since 2008 and supports the work of the Eckart von Hirschhausen Foundation Humor helps heal ( HHH ).

Appreciation

The German Post AG announced on March 1, 2014 two special stamp out the value of 45 ( Happy Easter ) and 60 euro cents ( For you ) with the chicken motifs from his "Huhniversum".

"For me it's an honor - the culmination of my career," says Peter Gaymann. Since caricature is neglected in Germany, he is happy that this art form has received more attention.
