The Röhrgraben is a medieval artificial moat and served the water supply of the Ehrenfriedersdorfer tin mining .

course

Starting from Greifenbach , it leads on the eastern slope in a south-easterly direction through the Greifenstein forest and makes a bend to the east near the former Greifenbach viaduct. After leaving the forest area, it leads - now partially piped - across meadows and fields in a north-westerly direction to Sauberg, where the federal road 95 is also crossed. The difference in height between the start and end point is 23.5 m; this corresponds to a gradient of 0.43%.

Before the mining development of the Sauberge, another section of the trench led from there to the Seifental, about 500 meters away, west of Ehrenfriedersdorf. Here, but also below the Sauberge, the water was used to drive various stamping mills , washes and the Ehrenfriedersdorfer Zinnhütte. The trench has been filled in on this section.

history

The extensive Ehrenfriedersdorfer mining, which had been in operation since the middle of the 13th century, prompted the miners to bring in additional service water for the tin processing . The forest and water-rich area at the Greifenbachstauweiher offers very favorable conditions for water extraction. The high plateau with closed forest area has an average annual rainfall of more than 1000 mm. The only moderate slope of the terrain and the good storage capacity of the soil ensure a relatively constant flow rate even in times of low rainfall and thus offered ideal conditions for creating an artificial trench.

The time of construction of the trench cannot be clearly determined. In a hereditary homage by the Ehrenfriedersdorfer on September 28, 1541, after Duke Georg's death, they complained: In Duke Georg's time, their justice was aborted ... Now Heinrich von Gersdorf and the bailiff from Wolkenstein threatened again to give them a river of water, which they had to inherit over 200 years… . The construction of the Röhrgraben should therefore be scheduled for before 1341, but this cannot be clearly proven. The local researcher Carl Langer suspects after evaluating several documents, which name the ditch, the second half of the 14th century as the construction period.

Since the middle of the 19th century, the Röhrgrabenwasser was also used by the Ehrenfriedersdorfer textile industry. In the last mining period, the water was brought to a pumping station, from which it was fed to the tin ore processing on the Sauberg until 1990.

present

Röhrgraben in April 2007

Until the mining industry was shut down in 1990, the water from the reed trench was used as process water for tin processing . This made it the oldest man-made moat in Germany that was still in operation.

Between 1999 and 2002, the Röhrgraben was restored in accordance with the requirements of a listed building. A hiking trail leads along the trench in the area of the Greifenstein forest.

The Röhrgrabenlauf takes place annually.

Art trenches on the Greifenstein

There were verifiably nine soap areas in the Greifenstein area . This suggests that there were other artificial ditches in addition to the Röhrgraben. In a complaint from the community of Ehrenfriedersdorf to Duke Heinrich from 1526, other watercourses are mentioned in addition to the Röhrgraben. Günter Schubert was able to prove their existence in a land survey lasting several months.
