It rises under the name Rotes Wasser in the Geyerschen Wald near Zwönitz and has been dammed in three ponds near the Greifensteine since 1396 , which were once created for tin mining . The Obere Geyersche Schutzteich , which has been called the Greifenbachstauweiher since its expansion in the 20th century , is the largest and has been known as a local recreation area since 1968. Below this reservoir, the stream is called the Greifenbach.

In the further course, the Greifenbach crosses the tin mining area between Geyer and Ehrenfriedersdorf , where the Ehrenfriedersdorfer Röhrgraben has been directing water from the brook to the mines in Sauberg near Ehrenfriedersdorf since 1380. At the village of Tannenberg the Greifenbach flows into the Zschopau.

Others

From 1904 to 1977, the imposing Greifenbach Viaduct of the Geyer-Thum railway line ran across the watercourse .
