The arsEdition GmbH is a German children's and gift book publishing company based in Munich . It was founded in 1896 as ars sacra Josef Müller Kunstanstalten and has been part of the internationally active Bonnier group based in Stockholm ( Sweden ) since September 2000 . arsEdition is one of the 100 largest publishers in Germany (62nd place, as of 2016). Michael Schweins has been the publisher's managing director since 2008. Between 60 and 70 employees work there annually on around 350 children's and gift books.

history

Founding of the art institute Josef Müller

Although Josef Müller had only just come of age in 1896 at the age of 24, he still founded his company - with little start-up capital , but made up for it with a suitable course of study . That was originally intended for the continuation of the parental devotional goods trade. Starting with a Catholic upbringing by the Benedictines in a boys' institute, his educational path led to a commercial school in Innsbruck , whereupon he completed an apprenticeship in bookselling in Munich . The Austrian chose the up-and-coming Munich as the location for his newly founded art institution Josef Müller . The city on the Isar developed into a printing and publishing city, while the number of inhabitants had doubled to 400,000. A major role played had moved authors such as Thomas and Heinrich Mann and Stefan George . Josef Müller initially planned the production of religious prints (e.g. pictures of saints ) and devotional objects (e.g. prayer books, rosaries ). In the same year Josef Müller married the daughter of a businessman , Maximiliane Pell. This then headed the publishing house. Maximiliane Müller gave birth to four children, but only the daughter Maria Maximiliane, called Lilly, was to reach old age.

The book publisher was born

Financially secure, Josef Müller also successfully produced books in the field of popular religious literature for the German-speaking Catholic area for the first time from 1912. Due to the euphoric beginning of the war, which was also received by the publisher , his program shifted to war stories, field and war prayers and prayers for consolation. The importance of illustrations crystallized.

First World War and sale of the publisher

After the end of the First World War , Josef Müller abruptly sold his art establishments to one of his biggest competitors, despite the success . As early as 1916, his 16-year-old son and successor Josef had an accident, which shook the entire family. In addition, there were social, economic and political unrest caused by the war, which were also carried out through marches on the company premises . In order to secure his publishing rights , he founded the company Verlag und Kunststätten Ars Sacra Josef Müller in 1919 before he settled in Switzerland with his wife and daughter for two years . During this time he was active both as an intermediary and in an advisory capacity in the religious printmaking segment. In the meantime, the couple was still preoccupied with the question of the family business succession. With the marriage of the daughter Lilly to the lawyer Dr. Herbert Dubler had solved this problem. From then on, after their return to Munich, Josef and Maximiliane Müller worked with Dr. Dubler together in the Catholic- oriented publishing house, which was extremely successful in the twenties and thirties. A novelty was the first series of gift books, "Von Himmel und Erde" (From Heaven and Earth) from the publisher Ars Sacra .

Extension of the program

At the end of the twenties, thanks to Maximiliane Müller's initiative, the previously popular religious program was expanded to include children's books just in time for the Christmas business. Again it was she who established contact with children's book authors and illustrators. In 1928, for example, “The Christ Child is Coming. A Christmas Book for Children from 1 to 80 Years ”and“ First Christmas ”by the author Marga Müller and the illustrator Josef Madlener . As one of the most important illustrators of the time, Else Wenz-Viëtor also worked for the publishing house. The illustrator and writer Ida Bohatta-Morpurgo , who had an exclusive contract, can still be mentioned as the publisher's figurehead in the children's book sector. Likewise, the illustrator sister Maria Innocentia Hummel also helped the publishing house to success.

After the seizure of power in 1933

Josef Müller succumbed to an illness in 1935; shortly before that, he bought the house on Friedrichstrasse, built by the famous Art Nouveau architect Martin Dülfer at the turn of the century, as the company's headquarters, where arsEdition is still based today. Due to the Catholic orientation of the program, the publishing house was increasingly put under pressure from 1937, especially by the Secret State Police . During this time, too, Maximiliane Müller continued to run the publishing house with the help of her son-in-law.

Second World War and the escape to Switzerland

Thanks to her marriage to Herbert Dubler, both Lilly Dubler and her four children had Swiss citizenship , which they made use of during World War II when Maximiliane, Lilly and the children lived in Lugano . In 1939 Lilly founded the Maria M. Dubler company in order to export via neutral Switzerland and to maintain the German publisher.

Post-war period and a new beginning

The end of the war presented publishers with new challenges: In addition to the lack of material, machines and employees, a license issued by the occupying powers had to be obtained in order to be allowed to move. The publisher, renamed Josef Müller in 1942, did not receive this license until 1948. The first program contained twenty books for children and young people, some of which were new, as well as an equal number of religious and literary works, with the focus of the zeitgeist on translations from English.

When Ida Bohatta demonstrated her innovative strength in 1949 with a tear-off advent calendar , a new foundation stone was laid for the publishing program. A year later Herbert Dubler took over the previous name Verlag Ars Sacra Josef Müller .

Another generation change

Due to a difference of opinion with her son, daughter Elisabeth Dubler was handed over the management of the publishing house in 1957. The new managing director attached importance to the religious program and acquired modern artists for Ars Sacra . When Maximiliane Müller died in 1963 at the age of 87, Lilly and Herbert Dubler also withdrew from the active publishing business. Herbert Dubler finally died on April 24, 1970.

In the 1960s and 1970s, all departments, bookbinding , warehouse and delivery were centered in the building on Friedrichstrasse. The print shop was initially located on Trivastraße as before, but was later also moved to Friedrichstraße. With Elisabeth Dubler, Ars Sacra reached its economic zenith since the post-war years .

The Marcel Nauer era

After the unexpected death of Elisabeth Dubler in 1979, Herbert Dubler's grandson Marcel Nauer took over the family business. He had long been prepared for this challenge through his all-encompassing and focused training . It took him from the humanistic grammar school , including Graecum , to St. Gallen to study business administration . His grandfather had also passed on the “furor librorum”, the passion for book production, to him at an early age. At the age of 26, the publisher was the youngest in the company, but at the same time had to bear all of the responsibility.

Marcel Nauer immediately began with radical restructuring, initially consistently decimating the backlist by more than 90 percent to 700 titles. In addition, the printing, lithography and handwriting departments were closed. The modernization was rounded off by the introduction of EDP and the reorganization of human resources . In terms of content, the publisher is also increasingly expanding its program in the children's and gift book sector as well as in stationery and non-books . In order to make this change of course visible to the outside world, Nauer had the new publisher name ars edition entered in the commercial register at the beginning of the 1980s . and place the three horizontal stripes of the “E” on each spine as a distinguishing feature . The tripartite division of the program structure is still reflected today in the three bars of the "E" in the arsEditio n logo , which has linked the two words since 1992. These changes from a denominational to one of the most important children's and gift book publishers soon became noticeable, not least through the “Magic Eye”, which was sold millions of times in the 1990s, and a distinctive trademark . Marcel Nauer withdrew completely from the former family business with the sale to Bonnier in 2000 .

Program examples

The “Berlin Packages”, which were part of the program from 2001 to 2015, were published on the initiative of publisher Marcel Nauer. They triggered a new wave in the pop-up area by recreating a detailed three-dimensional tour of the city through the ages.

In 2004, the first title in the new book series “Geheime Welten” appeared with “Expedition into the secret world of dragons”. The new type of product with fold-out pages, pop-ups, fold-out and slide effects and topics related to dragons, magic, pirates, Egypt, mythology and others made arsEdition a success. Several editions of the dragon book as well as the second volume on the subject of Egypt established the new series.

In 2012 arsEdition took over the children's and youth book program from Bloomsbury Verlag GmbH. These books as well as selected titles from arsEdition's children's book program from 12 years of age resulted in the imprint bloomoon .

On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the publishing house in 2016, there was a brand relaunch including a new logo and the new claim “arsEdition ... brings joy” (previously “give and experience”). The presentation of the German Brand Awards 2016 rounded off these changes.

Meanwhile arsEdition published titles in the segments of cardboard and picture book , children's literature , children's employment and child nonfiction, gift book and non-book items.
