geography

history

The place was first mentioned in 1505.

The first “Steckebürer” was a “Johan an dem Steckelboirn”, who earned his living by raising and fattening pigs . He lived with his family near a spring ("Born"), the origin of Steckenborn, on today's Bornstrasse. Much has happened in these 500 years. Agriculture, previously the main occupation of the inhabitants, is now limited to three large farms. There are also some craft businesses from different sectors.

The district of Hechelscheid belongs to Steckenborn. This was attached to the municipality of Steckenborn on April 1, 1957 after a previous municipal council resolution and a vote by the Hechelscheid population through a state law. Before 1957, Hechelscheid belonged to the municipality of Rurberg .

Until the end of 1971, Steckenborn belonged as an independent municipality to the Monschau district, which was also dissolved (see Aachen Law ). On January 1, 1972, Steckenborn was incorporated into Simmerath.

The parish of St. Appollonia has existed since 1720.
