Witzerath in the Eifel is a district of the municipality of Simmerath in the North Rhine-Westphalian city ​​region of Aachen . It has 67 households with 193 inhabitants.

Geographical location

Witzerath is located in the North Eifel in the German - Belgian nature park Hohes Venn-Eifel ; the Eifel National Park extends around 5.5 km (as the crow flies ) to the east. State roads  246 (Simmerath – Witzerath– Strauch ) run through the village in the Monschauer Heckenland in the east and 12 (Simmerath – Witzerath– Lammersdorf ) in the west; from the latter the Kreisstraße  32 (Witzerath - Rollesbroich ) branches off. The small Kall tributary Fischbach flows southwest past it .

history

Name origin

As with many place names, the final syllable rath in Witzerath points to clearing as the origin of the place. The name was first mentioned in 1560 in the context of the Simmerath parish created in 1346 .
