Jürgen Friedrichs

Jürgen Friedrichs (born November 2, 1938 in Berlin ; † February 19, 2019 in Cologne ) was a German sociologist . Among other things, he was a professor at the University of Cologne . Friedrichs is considered a critical rationalist .

Life

Friedrichs studied sociology, philosophy, psychology and economics at the University of Hamburg from 1961 . He received his doctorate in philosophy in 1968 , initially held a position as an assistant at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Hamburg, and from 1973 a professorship there.

One focus of his work was urban sociology - under his direction the Research Center for Comparative Urban Research was founded at the University of Hamburg in 1982 . In 1991 Friedrichs received a call to the chair of sociology at the University of Cologne. From 1991 to 2007 he was director of the Research Institute for Sociology and then the Institute for Applied Social Research . From 1992 to 2012 he was co-editor of the Cologne journal for sociology and social psychology . Since 2007 he has been emeritus at the Institute for Sociology and Social Psychology and continues to work in teaching and research.

He was involved in several EU projects, most recently in FACIT - Faith-based Organizations and Exclusion in European Cities (2007 to 2011). From 2010 (until 2014) he did research on gentrification in Cologne with Jörg Blasius . His other areas of research were: social inequality , segregation , urban poverty areas, integration of migrants (especially refugees), as well as context effects and in addition "Environmental Sociology" in teaching. For many years he was also a trainer for journalists at the ARD.ZDF media academy and the ORF .

Friedrichs died on February 19, 2019 at the age of 80 and was buried in the Melaten central cemetery in Cologne .
