Karl-Dieter Opp

Karl-Dieter Opp (born May 26, 1937 in Cologne ) is a German sociologist . Opp is a professor emeritus at the University of Leipzig .

life and work

After graduating from high school in 1957, Opp completed a commercial apprenticeship at the Ford factory in Cologne . This was followed by a degree in economics and business administration , law , business education and sociology at the University of Cologne . 1967 PhD with René König in Cologne. From 1967 Opp was an assistant at the Sociological Seminar of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg , where he completed his habilitation in 1970 . In 1971 he became professor of sociology at the University of Hamburg . 1991–1992 he held the Theodor Heuss Professorship at the New School for Social Research in New York. Opp has been Professor of Sociology at the University of Leipzig since 1993 (Emeritus since 2002). In 2007 Opp became an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington (Seattle) . Opp took on the following visiting professorships (selection):

Opp was a Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) 1976/1977 and the Russell Sage Foundation in 1996/1997, and Academic Visitor at Nuffield College of Oxford University .

Opp is heavily influenced by the individualistic approach . In this sense he developed u. a. the theories of deviant behavior and political participation .
