history

Steckenborn has belonged to the Simmerath parish since the Middle Ages . At the end of the 17th century, the residents of Steckenborn wanted their own place of worship, because until then the place had no church of its own. The then Simmerath pastor Peter Richartz supported this project. The foundation for a church building was created by the foundation of a piece of land by the married couple Maria and Peter Gerards. The first church in Steckenborn was built by 1702, which was now a branch church of the Simmerath parish. In 1705 the place got its own vicar .

During the reorganization of the parishes and dioceses in the French era , Steckenborn was separated from Simmerath in 1804 and raised to the status of an independent parish . This parish was assigned to the newly founded diocese of Aachen . Since this diocese was dissolved again in 1825, the parish came back to the Archdiocese of Cologne . Since the re-establishment of the diocese of Aachen, Steckenborn has belonged to this diocese again since 1930 .

Building history

The first church in Steckenborn, completed between 1700 and 1702, was designed by the local builder Hubert Nießen. The church was a simple hall construction in forms of Baroque and was built in August 1702 benediziert . At the turn of the 20th century this church became too small and it was decided to build a new and larger church on the site of the old parish church.

The current parish church was built from 1905 to 1906 according to plans by the Cologne diocesan master builder Franz Statz in neo -Gothic style. The solemn consecration of the new church took place on July 9, 1907.

During the Second World War , the church was blown up by German soldiers in 1944, the roofs collapsed and the vaults in the nave . In 1950 and 1951, the reconstruction took place in slightly simplified forms. The roofs were rebuilt lower and a new barrel vault was inserted in the nave. Otherwise the building remained unchanged. Architect Carl Hermes from Kesternich directed the reconstruction. In 1963 the church received a much larger sacristy . Leo Weber from Kesternich provided the plans.

The font is made of sandstone and was taken from the old church. It was created in 1702 and the brass lid in 1824. There is also a wooden cross from 1856 in the church and several painted wooden figures of saints. The organ has 19 stops on an electric action and was made by the Aachen organ building firm Karl Bach . The stained glass windows from 1970 are works by Heinrich Geuer .

In the bell tower there is a three-part bronze bell . The two larger bells were cast by Feldmann & Marschel in Münster in 1952. The smallest bell is the work of bell founder Jakob von Trier from 1652. It was in the parish church of St. Rochus in Wollseifen until 1946 .
