The law for the reorganization of the municipalities and districts of the reorganization area Aachen (Aachen law) was passed on December 14, 1971 and is related to the major regional reform in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The administrative district of Aachen and the districts of Erkelenz , Jülich , Monschau , Schleiden and Selfkant district of Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg were dissolved and restructured.

Later changes

  • In contrast to the new regulations at the municipal and district level, the Aachen administrative district was only dissolved with effect from August 1, 1972 and almost completely incorporated into the Cologne administrative district. Small areas were reclassified to the Düsseldorf administrative district .
  • The town of Heimbach of the municipality of Nideggen described here was spun off again and again independent.
  • Niederkrüchten was later assigned to the Viersen district .
  • Erftstadt was later assigned to the Erftkreis (now Rhein-Erft-Kreis ).
