Konzen is a north-western district of Monschau in the Aachen city region and is located directly on the Belgian border and the High Fens .

history

The Venndorf Konzen is the oldest part of Monschau. It was from here that the castle and town of Monschau were founded. The Konzen coat of arms shows Charlemagne, who is holding a model of the Aachen collegiate church in his hands next to a lily scepter.

Konzen is mentioned for the first time in a document from the year 888, with which the Frankish King Arnolf , great-great-grandson of Charlemagne , confirmed a donation by King Lothar II . This related to taxes on income from agriculture and forestry in the Aachen area, which in future had to be paid to the Aachen Marienstift . Konzen is named as one of 43 Carolingian royal courts in the Aachen region that were obliged to pay additional taxes over and above the usual ten .

The exact time of the establishment of the "Konzener Königshof" is not exactly known. What is certain is that the Monschau region was already settled in Roman times, at least from the 3rd / 4th century AD. The original population gave up their settlements after the invasion of the Franks in the 5th century, because since then, with a few exceptions, only forest areas have been located in the former settlement areas. Traffic routes from Roman times can be proven; A connection between two main roads of the Western Roman Empire obviously led from Kesternich via Konzen and Mützenich through the High Fens , which can be proven on the basis of Roman finds along this route as well as the non-Franconian place names of the area: Konzen z. B. derives from the Latin word compendium , the reading of which "Abbreviation route" indicates a settlement in the middle of those two main streets. The names resulting from Roman colonization and the fact that the original settlements were replaced by dense forests shows that the Franks must have avoided this area for a long time. However, since land in the Franconian Empire was always owned by the king, the area of today's Monschau was finally included in a forest organization. The Konzener Königshof, which had been founded in the meantime, was later appointed as its administrative seat; a function that it fulfilled for several centuries. A property from the Franconian era can still be found in the area.

With the Pankratius Chapel , Konzen has the oldest building in the region, the foundation walls and the font are also dated to the Carolingian - Franconian period. In more recent times, the chapel was used as a place of laying out and funeral ceremonies until a new morgue was built. This function has now been taken over by the funeral hall opposite, which has been sponsored by the "Wir für Konzen" association since 2019.

After extensive destruction in the late phase of the Second World War, the rural-village structures of an Eifel village were initially formed again. Due to the increasing motorization , Konzen has experienced a significant population increase in the past 30 years due to new arrivals and commuters to Aachen.

Until the end of 1971 Konzen belonged as an independent municipality to the also dissolved Monschau district and this to the also dissolved administrative district of Aachen (see Aachen Law ) and at that time belonged to the Imgenbroich office . On January 1, 1972, Konzen was incorporated into the city of Monschau. 25 residents moved to Simmerath .
