Kalterherberg is a south-western part of Monschau in the city region of Aachen and until December 31, 1971 belonged as an independent municipality to the then dissolved district of Monschau , which in turn belonged to the also dissolved administrative district of Aachen (see Aachen Law ).
The name characterizes the place. Located directly on the High Fens , this high-lying border town with Belgium is the first to experience wind and weather in typical westerly weather conditions. Beech windbreaks as high as the house provide a remedy; Kalterherberg is a typical example of the Monschau Heckenland .
geography
Kalterherberg is located on the Belgian border, 4 km southwest of Monschau. The Belgian military training area Elsenborn is located south of the village .
climate
The annual precipitation is 1386 mm and is thus in the upper third of the values recorded by the measuring points of the German Weather Service . Over 96% indicate lower values. The seasonal fluctuations in precipitation are in the upper third. In over 92% of all places, the monthly precipitation fluctuates less. |
history
The oldest document in which Kalterherberg is mentioned is dated May 1, 1334. In this year Johannes Payzsche and his wife Alleidis sold an annual cash pension to the Reichenstein monastery in “Kaldeherberich” and used their goods in Kalterherberg as a pledge. The lay judges and the forester von Konzen confirmed this trade. In the Aachen city bill of 1385, Kalterherberg is also mentioned in connection with a "Thiis van der Kalden Herbergen". In another document from 1391 the name "Kalde Herberge" appears. Around 1550 there was a chapel dedicated to St. Lambertus . The so-called Eifeldom , the Catholic parish church of St. Lambertus, was built between 1897 and 1903 and was extensively renovated between 1954 and 1957.
The language and state border originally ran roughly in the Rur Valley. After the end of Napoleon's reign , u. a. the Rhineland, ceded to the French since the First Coalition War (see Peace of Lunéville ) in the Congress of Vienna to Prussia. At this time from 1815 Küchelscheid-Leykaul also belonged to the Rhine Province , but was given to Belgium by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 after the First World War . In the Second World War , it was again part of the German Reich for a few years, but was liberated again by Western Allied troops in autumn 1944, with the population being evacuated to Belgium by US troops. On April 1, 1949, the western parts of the village of Leykaul, which formerly belonged to Kalterherberg, as well as several farms were temporarily converted to Belgium . These areas were returned to Germany on August 28, 1958 on the basis of a German-Belgian border treaty concluded on September 24, 1956 ( Federal Law Gazette 1958 II p. 262 ). The western part of Leykaul remained permanently with Belgium and, like Küchelscheid , today belongs to the German-speaking community within the municipality of Bütgenbach .
On January 1, 1972, Kalterherberg was incorporated into the city of Monschau by the Aachen law .
On May 13, 2002, Kalterherberg was passed through during the second stage of the Giro d'Italia .
