Maximilian Goffart (born January 17, 1921 in Kalterherberg ; † July 17, 1980 in Aachen ) was a German clergyman and auxiliary bishop in Aachen .

Live and act

After graduating from high school in 1940, Goffart was drafted into the six-month Reich Labor Service and deployed in France. He then began his military service there in the Wehrmacht and was later transferred to North Africa. In 1943 he was taken prisoner in Tunis as a flag boy of a paratrooper unit . Goffart was transferred to the southern United States and was sent to a labor camp there for three years.

After his subsequent return to Germany, Goffart began studying theology at the universities in Bonn and Münster. In Bonn he joined the newly founded “St. Albertus-Magnus-Unitas ”, which follows the tradition of the WKSt.V. , which was banned in 1940 . Unitas Rhenania to Bonn continued. Later Goffart was a member of the WKSt.V. Unitas Stolzenfels in Bonn. Following his student days he attended the seminary Aachen and received on 25 July 1952, the priestly ordination .

On August 2, 1952 Maximilian Goffart started his first job as chaplain at the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Mönchengladbach and on August 10, 1960, he moved to St. Josef in Viersen . With his appointment as pastor , Goffart was transferred to St. Kosmas and Damian in Titz on August 4, 1964 . In 1966 he was appointed dean of the dean's office in Hasselsweiler and a year later he was appointed district dean of the Jülich district . In 1971 Goffart took over the position of pastor at St. Lucia (Stolberg) in Stolberg and had the church equipped with a concert organ. In 1973 he was also appointed regional dean of the Aachen-Land region.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on December 2, 1977 auxiliary bishop in Aachen and titular bishop of Uzita . The bishop of Aachen, Klaus Hemmerle , donated him episcopal ordination on February 18, 1978 . Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops Joseph Ludwig Buchkremer and Gerd Dicke .

Auxiliary Bishop Goffart died on July 17, 1980 and he found his final resting place in the bishop's crypt of Aachen Cathedral .
