Joseph Ludwig Buchkremer (born October 4, 1899 in Aachen ; † August 24, 1986 there ) was auxiliary bishop of the Aachen diocese from 1961 to 1979 .

Life

Joseph Buchkremer was the son of the Aachen cathedral builder Joseph Buchkremer and brother of Stephan Buchkremer , the founder of the Aachen Cathedral Guard . He studied theology in Münster , where he was active from 1919 to 1921 at the KStV Cimbria in the KV in Münster. Ordained a priest on August 10, 1923 in Cologne , then worked at St. Adalbert in Aachen, as a city ​​youth chaplain he was banned from teaching by the National Socialists as early as 1935 . The reason was strong opposition to the Nazi ideology . So he arranged for the distribution of the encyclical With Burning Concern .

Because of his activities against the regime, Joseph Buchkremer was arrested on February 20, 1942 and deported to the Dachau concentration camp on March 20 . He was only released there on April 4, 1945. The Americans liberated the camp at the end of the month.

On October 28, 1961, Pope John XXIII appointed him . as titular bishop of Aggar and auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Aachen . He was ordained bishop on December 21, 1961 by the Bishop of Aachen, Johannes Pohlschneider . Co -consecrators were Bishop Carl Maria Splett of Danzig and Auxiliary Bishop Friedrich Hünermann . Buchkremer's motto “Deo et Hominibus” - for God and for people - also reminded of his advocacy against the injustice of the Nazi state.

Buchkremer resigned from his office at the age of 80 on October 4, 1979 and died on August 24, 1986.
