The transport company Transport en Commun , abbreviated to TEC ("Public Transport", also Société Régionale Wallonne du Transport (SRWT) ), is a Belgian public transport company that operates local public transport in Wallonia .

Created by splitting up the SNCV

Like the De Lijn company responsible for Flanders , the TEC emerged as part of the Belgian regionalization in 1991 from the state-owned National Small Railway Company ( SNCV / NMVB), which has been operating nationwide to date and which, in addition to the National Society of Belgian Railways (SNCB / NMBS) was the largest provider of passenger transport in Belgium. In the Walloon parts of the country, TEC took over the transport network, the employees and the vehicle fleet of the predecessor company.

In the whole of Belgium there are only three local transport companies, namely TEC in Wallonia, De Lijn in Flanders and STIB / MIVB in Brussels .

city traffic

The previously independent municipal transport companies of the cities of Verviers , Liège and Charleroi have also been integrated . In addition to the otherwise pure bus operation, the TEC also operates the Charleroi light rail system with four lines as the last remnant of the earlier, extensive interurban tram network of the SNCV. The company also operates the funicular in Spa .

The bus fleet currently consists of more than 1,500 of its own buses , plus over 500 vehicles under contract from private bus companies. With around 3.4 million inhabitants in the catchment area, the TEC transports around 158 million passengers a year. The city and region of Liège alone account for around 30% of the company's vehicle fleet, which transports around 100 million people per year.

Cross-border bus routes

In cooperation with ASEAG, TEC operates the most important cross-border line 14 from Eupen to Aachen . In addition, there are several connections to Germany and the Netherlands in the Aachen - Maastricht region, for example route 396 from Eupen via Kelmis to Vaals in the Netherlands.
