The Société des Transports Intercommunaux de Bruxelles (French, STIB ) or Maatschappij voor het Intercommunaal Vervoer te Brussel (Dutch, MIVB ), society for inter-community traffic in Brussels , is the transport company of the 19 municipalities in the Brussels-Capital Region .
The STIB / MIVB was founded in 1954 and operates as a municipal public transport provider which has opened in 1976 subway of Brussels Metro , the tram Brussels as well as the inner-city buses . The overall network consists of four underground lines with a length of 39 kilometers, 18 tram lines with 128.3 km line length and 47 bus lines with 348.8 km line length in an area of the capital region of 161 km².
Some tram lines run as Premetro in the underground advance service on tunnel routes . Quite a few of the bus routes extend beyond Brussels to the suburbs belonging to Flanders . In 2007 around 285 million passengers were carried. In April 2007 a new night bus network called Noctis was introduced.
For users there is a single and a network tariff, in which the tickets across the board in addition to the STIB / MIVB also with the Belgian State Railways (SNCB) and the regional public transport companies in Flanders and Wallonia , De Lijn and TEC in the Brussels region -Capital can be used.
Since around the middle of the 2000s, the STIB / MIVB's means of transport have gradually been changed to a new color scheme, the old yellow-blue-red became silver-orange. Until the 1980s, the color scheme of the tram and bus was cream-colored with blue stripes.
Trams were traveled in 2018 with 397 trams, the model T3000 was the most common model with 150 trains, followed by the T4000 with 70 trains, both belonging to the Cityrunner of Bombardier . Of the old 7700 models, 65 trains are still in use. On average, the trains are used for thirty years. The STIB / MIVB employed 1,400 tram drivers. In 2017, 104 cases of physical violence against tram and bus drivers were reported, 23 cases more than in the previous year. There were also 582 reported cases of verbal attacks (57 more than in the previous year).
Tram museum
In the oldest part of the tram depot in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre , there has been a tram museum since 1977 on the initiative of the then President of the STIB, Guy Cudell. This has been operated by the Musée du Transport Urbain Bruxellois association since 1982 , while the building and most of the wagons continue to belong to the STIB. A complete renovation took place between 2006 and 2010.
