history

The reason for the construction was the north-south connecting railway , which opened in 1952. As a result of the construction, the area around the former terminal stations Gare du Nord / Noordstation and Gare du Midi / Zuidstation was completely reorganized in terms of urban planning.
There was an urgent need for action on the Place de la Constitution in front of the Gare du Midi / Zuidstation, as several main streets and a large number of tram routes converge there, all of which at the time were still running on the surface and thus hindered each other.
That is why it was decided in 1950 to build a tunnel system for the tram, which would also have created new lines. This complex structure was put into operation on December 16, 1957. More tunnels followed.
