Barmen is a district of Jülich in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

Barmen is protected on the slope of the Rur valley in the Jülich- Zülpicher Börde . Neighboring towns are Floßdorf (city of Linnich ), Koslar and Merzenhausen . On the other side of the Rur are the towns of Tetz and Broich .

history

Barmen is an old settlement area. Already in the Stone Age people settled on the Barmener Heide, as numerous finds show. The earliest tools could be assigned to the Paleolithic. The first documentary mention was made in the Prümer Urbar in 893, according to which there was already a church in the village. The assumption that the church mentioned there stood at a different location from today's church has meanwhile been disproved.

In Barmen there are two aristocratic residences, Kellenberg Castle , which is inhabited by the Counts of the Hoensbroech family, and Overbach House , which was given to the Oblates of St. in 1918 by Count von und zu Hoensbroech. Franz von Sales was sold and today is, among other things, the seat of the high school of the same name . Furthermore, the Barmen fortress of the Lords of Barmen can be assumed in the area of today's Eschenhof, which is located right next to the parish church . The old Barmen family castle was cremated in a dispute with the Count of Jülich in 1352, around the same time the two aristocratic residences still preserved were mentioned for the first time.

Numerous architectural monuments that were entered in the list of monuments of the city of Jülich are located in Barmen. Further information on the individual monuments can be found in the list of architectural monuments in Jülich .

On January 1, 1972, the Barmen community was incorporated into the city of Jülich.

church

St. Martinus

The Romanesque-Gothic church of St. Martinus is located in Barmen.

nature

Nature is particularly worth seeing in Barmen. The village is framed and criss-crossed by five nature reserves . The cornerstone of the nature reserve around Barmen and around Kellenberg Castle was laid by Reinhard Graf von und zu Hoensbroech around 1952. The quarry pond as a recreation area and refuge for rare animal species offers, like the Rur, an oasis of relaxation. The Rur in the Barmen area is the only river in North Rhine-Westphalia that flows in its original river bed without ever being straightened or canalized. In this respect, this Rurmäander is not only a unique landscape for the animal world. A mill pond runs right through the village.

education

The former knight's seat Overbach House has been sold to the Oblates of St. Franz von Sales used as a school in 1918. Today the state-recognized Haus Overbach grammar school is located there . The Haus Overbach campus also includes the monastery, the singing school, several orchestras and an event center. In the summer of 2009 a new building was inaugurated, the so-called Science College. On the one hand, regular lessons in the MINT subjects take place in the laboratories, seminar rooms and lecture halls ; on the other hand, the Science College offers extracurricular educational offers such as B. Holiday academies, lectures or workshops.

In addition, the place has the Catholic day care center St. Martinus and a play group called "Flea circus". The closest elementary school is in the neighboring town of Koslar.
