Kellenberg Castle is a moated castle on the northern edge of the village of Barmen , a district of Jülich , on the Rur .

history

The original owner of the Kellenberg fortress was initially Mr. Edmund von Barmen and subsequently Gerhard Mulart von Hullhoven. By marrying his daughter it came to Wilhelm von Wevelinghoven the Hereditary Marshal of Cologne in 1429, then Scheiffardt von Merode, under whom the current complex was built in the 15th and 16th centuries.

In 1626 Otto Heinrich Waldbott von Bassenheim (1561–1639), who held the house and estate Kellenberg as a pledge from Wilhelm Scheiffart von Merode, Lord of Bornheim, sold the property for 4,762 Reichstaler , 51  Albus and 4  Heller to Johann Karl von Utenhove († 1616 / 19). His son Johann Ludwig Utenhove had debts, so that his wife Francoise de Besancon sold Gut Kellenberg in 1638 to Johann Graf von Werth, also known as Jan van Werth.

Jan van Werth , Imperial General in the Thirty Years' War , bought the castle in 1638 for his only daughter Lambertine Irmgardis, whose descendants still live here today. Lambertine Irmgard married Winand Hieronymus Baron Raitz von Frentz . He was the son of the former landlord at Schlenderhan Castle , where Jan van Werth served as a groom in his youth. After the death of the Reitergeneral in 1655, after a legal dispute, the German possessions came to Werth's daughter and thus to the Raitz von Frentz family. The castle remained in the family's possession until the line of barons Raitz von Frentz zu Kellenberg died out in the male line.

In 1888, through marriage, the castle came into the possession of the Counts of the Hoensbroech family , who owned Kellenberg until 2009. A fire on April 1, 1992 almost completely destroyed the main palace. At the beginning of 2009, the castle in its entirety was sold to the construction and property company of North Rhine-Westphalia (BLB) for 3.1 million euros . The price was determined by an expert opinion commissioned by BLB. However, BLB wrote the value down in full just a few months later. The inconsistencies that also occurred in other SU projects are currently the subject of proceedings at the Düsseldorf regional court.

Kellenberger Mill

Moat and mill wheel of the Kellenberger mill

Not far from the castle is the Kellenberger Mühle , which was built around 1500 . The current building dates back to 1784. The grain mill was in operation until 1963. The mill is currently being restored and should be habitable again soon.

Nulandt cross

On February 27, 1681, the commander of the city of Düren and bailiff of Aldenhoven, the Palatinate-Neuburgian warlord and chamberlain, colonel and commander of a regiment on foot, Johann Dietrich Freiherr von Nulandt in the Rur not far from Kellenberg Castle, drowned by turning his carriage . In his memory, his family had a mighty and artistically designed cross built from Belgian granite, which was badly destroyed by vandalism in the early 1970s. On September 3, 2016, the destroyed Nulandt cross was made accessible to the public again as a replica in the Kellenberg Forest near the original location.
