The Haus Overbach grammar school in the Jülich district of Barmen is a state-recognized grammar school in the independent sponsorship of Haus Overbach gGmbH. About 900 pupils currently attend the school, which is a member of the MINT-EC association. Other high schools in Jülich, about 5 km away, are the girls' high school Jülich and the citadel high school .

The school was founded in 1918 and was a boys' school until 1981. The symphony orchestra , the Overbach wind orchestra , the choirs of the Overbach Singing School and numerous sports groups are well known. Music , languages ​​and natural sciences are key areas in the school profile. The Overbach Advent Singing by the brass orchestra and the Overbach choirs is also known locally. Every autumn, Haus Overbach organizes a school festival, the “Overbacher Kirmes”, the proceeds of which are used for new acquisitions, such as B. new gymnastics equipment can be used. In addition, the grammar school annually organizes a vacation academy during the summer holidays with the support of Forschungszentrum Jülich , RWTH Aachen University and several other companies , which deals with current research topics ( genetic engineering , cosmology , meteorology , artificial intelligence, etc.). In addition to its own students, there are also students from all over Germany. Thanks to financial support from IBM , a group of Chinese students and in summer 2007 a group of Turkish students were able to take part in the holiday academy for the first time in the summer of 2006.

As part of the so-called "Overbacher Kultur specials", which were carried out with the support of Aachener Nachrichten , personalities such as Reinhold Messner , Reiner Kunze , Michel Friedman and Jürgen Fliege also visited the grammar school to give lectures there or to talk to the interested public to discuss with the students.

History of school operations

On November 16, 1918, Reichsgraf von und zu Hoensbroech sold the Overbach house to the Oblates of St. Franz von Sales , who then expanded it into a grammar school, so that on April 24, 1919 the Overbach Missionary College began operations under the headmaster Father Franz Xaver Bogenberger , who was replaced in 1923 by Father Albert Filchner as the new headmaster. The first Overbach chapel was inaugurated on January 30, 1921, and the boarding school building was completed in 1923. The boarding school has since been closed.

In 1939, however, the Overbach Mission School had to close and was home to around 600 Siegfried Line workers . In 1941 Haus Overbach became a quarter for 400 Cologne orphans . After 1944, however, Overbach was badly damaged by the effects of the Second World War and many parts of the building were destroyed. The new buildings erected after the war should, however, retain the line of the economic wings of the old castle. From the original, medieval moated castle , only the manor house, in which the library of the grammar school is housed today (see picture above), and the water-filled northern and eastern parts of the moat are preserved.

On September 19, 1946, the private middle school Overbach was reopened by the headmaster Father Peter Thull , who was replaced as the new headmaster on April 27, 1948 by Father Johannes Weindorf . During this time, Overbach was temporarily recognized by the state as an old-language Progymnasium Haus Overbach . In 1953, Father Dr. theol. et phil. Hubert Pauels new headmaster and almost 2 years later the new building of the auditorium and (old) tower hall was inaugurated on October 23, 1955. In 1960 the name was changed to the old language high school Haus Overbach and on April 30, 1960 it was permanently recognized as a Progymnasium. The following year, on January 12, 1961, construction work began on the new school wing I east of the previous building. On April 13, 1961, the official title was Gymnasium iE Haus Overbach . This year there was an Obersekunda in Overbach for the first time, so that on March 10, 1964, the first old-language school- leaving exam was taken at the GHO. Six years later, on June 22, 1970, the first Abitur in the modern language branch followed. At the beginning of the 1970s, the upper school was reformed . The first Abitur after the reform of the upper school was awarded on June 18, 1974. Just two months later, Erwin Hoffmann became the new headmaster at the GHO on August 1, 1974. On September 7, 1981, co-education at the GHO finally began . A year later, on September 7, 1982, the new gymnasium was inaugurated and again a year later, on August 22, 1983, the new school wing IV. In 1989 Heinz Lingen took over the school management. After 25 years at the grammar school, in 2014 he moved to the management of the entire Haus Overbach facility. Since then, Thorsten Vogelsang has been provisional director of the school and has been the director of the Haus Overbach grammar school since August 1, 2015. Since 2018, the new co-partner, Christliches Jugenddorfwerk Deutschlands, has taken over the management of the entire Haus Overbach facility. The sponsorship changed from the Oblates of St. Franz von Sales zur Haus Overbach gGmbH.

Music and art

Music is a focus in the profile of the Haus Overbach high school. In a total of four orchestras (Overbach young orchestra, symphony orchestra, wind orchestra and chamber orchestra) and four choirs (singing group, children's choir, young choir, chamber choir), the students have numerous opportunities to gain musical experience. In the upper level there is also the opportunity to include orchestral or choir work (instrumental / vocal practical course) in the Abitur.

The children's choir, the young choir and the wind orchestra organize an annual Advent singing in the monastery church of Overbach, and the chamber orchestra and the chamber choir perform the Christmas oratorio by JS Bach every year .

The grammar school provides rooms for afternoon individual instrumental lessons, which are given by external music teachers. They are in contact with the school and the orchestras and complement the musical training programs in the Jülich region (e.g. the Jülich Music School ), as not only high school students are taught here.

In addition, the Burgtheater Overbach, an in-house professional theater stage, was founded in 2016. The Burgtheater Overbach was created as part of a cooperation between the Aachen drama school and the Haus Overbach grammar school.

The Burgtheater Overbach also has the task of professional education and training. Training courses for educators and teachers in the fields of literature and theater take place. The offer is aimed nationwide at high school teachers who z. B. Lead literature courses.

In addition, z. B. Acting workshops offered for those interested in theater. Subjects such as acting, speech training, stage fighting, singing and dance are always taught.

Telescopes at Haus Overbach grammar school

The Gymnasium Haus Overbach has several telescopes with openings from 7 cm to 32 cm. The optical systems range from simple refractors to Newtonian reflecting telescopes and Schmidt-Cassegrains . With these telescopes, astronomical events such as eclipses or transits can be broadcast live in schools and lessons. As part of working groups, pupils from other schools also use the opportunity to work with these telescopes.

New Lunar Society

Science evenings organized by the New Lunar Society aim to arouse interest in science among students. Scientists from universities , Forschungszentrum Jülich or RWTH Aachen University are invited at irregular intervals to give lectures on current research topics and then to discuss them with the students and guests. Well-known lecturers at science evenings were, for example, Harald Lesch , Ulrich Walter , HJ Blome or Walter Oelert .

The "Teachers - Students - Scientists in Dialogue" project was awarded first prize by the Robert Bosch Foundation.

Euregionale 2008 / Science College

House Overbach contributed to the construction of the Science College for EuRegionale 2008 at. The 7.2 million euro construction project is intended to promote communication and collaboration between schoolchildren, scientists, universities, the Jülich Research Center and other scientific institutions. The multi-storey building contains several laboratories, seminar rooms and a platform for telescopes on the roof. In addition to the main building, a guest house with accommodation was also built. It was completed in summer 2009.

In January 2016, the Science College Overbach was recognized by the NRW Economics Minister Garrelt Duin (SPD) as a “Place of Progress NRW”.
