The Science College Overbach (SCO) in the Jülich district of Barmen is a youth and educational innovation center for the disciplines of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology (MINT) . Conceived as an extracurricular learning location , experimental workshops, research camps and holiday academies for all types of schools are held year-round in the school laboratory and in the practice rooms. Interdisciplinary school symposia, family education and public events for the general public are also part of the program. For the extracurricular education program “Let's Do Science”, the SCO was awarded the status of “Place of Progress NRW” by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2015, as it innovatively combines economy , ecology and social issues and thus enables progress for society.

Extracurricular learning location

The educational offers are intended to improve the learning and professional opportunities of the participants and to sensitize them to future-oriented thinking and acting. Individual support, practical orientation, interdisciplinarity and the dialogue about the ethical aspects of science and research enjoy high priority. Study and career orientation are fixed components of the program.

Individual support for children and young people

The SCO offers extracurricular educational opportunities for all ages throughout the year. In experimental workshops or research camps, scientific topics are conveyed in an action-oriented manner. The focus here is on “research-based learning”. Especially during the school holidays, the SCO offers multi-day holiday academies with overnight stays and full board. In addition to the workshops in the school laboratory, the academies offer the opportunity to talk to students and experts from science and research and to gain an insight into current research topics. Exploring companies and research institutes from different industries and disciplines is a key point. The visits provide orientation for future studies and professional prospects. An interdisciplinary school symposium is dedicated to the scientific challenges of globalization. Every year around 100 young people from Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands go “in search of the global compass”.

Training center for educational professionals

The SCO is accredited as an extracurricular learning location and is a cooperation partner in the context of educational training. At the SCO, MINT advanced training events are organized all year round for educators, primary school teachers and for teachers of SEK-I and SEK-II. The focus of the educational offer is on imparting skills in "research-based learning".

Overbacher Astromarathon

Every autumn, the SCO's AstroClub organizes a public event on astronomy in collaboration with actors from science, research and family education. As part of the “Overbacher Astromarathon”, scientists, amateur astronomers, students and schoolchildren meet and exchange views on current topics and research projects. Sky observations on the SCO's free class are also part of the program.

Innovation location

The SCO participates in regional, national and international educational initiatives in the promotion of the MINT disciplines, study and career orientation and science communication. The SCO is a location partner of educational institutions, foundations, associations, scientific institutions and companies, including the JuniorAkademie NRW, the junior engineering academies in the Aachen region and the LernFerien NRW.

Educational architecture

The design and implementation of the SCO originate from the Aachen architecture office Hahn Helten Architektur. The architects are winners of the NRW School Construction Award 2013. The building meets the requirements of a passive house and is itself a teaching and learning object. It is a national model project for energy-optimized building.

history

The SCO was founded as part of the regional development initiative EuRegionale 2008 with funds from the federal government, the state, private donors and the Congregation of the Oblates of St. Francis of Sales erected. The inauguration took place in June 2009. From the opening until the end of 2016, around 17,000 children, young people, educators and academically interested visitors have attended the educational events as part of the “Let's Do Science” program.
