The girls' high school Jülich (short: MGJ) is a state-recognized, private high school in Jülich , Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia . Since January 24th, 2009 it has been a state-recognized European school .

The MGJ is one of the last all- girls high schools in Germany .

history

In 1891 the Poor Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration from Olpe opened the girls' school in Jülich. In 1899 the school building was inaugurated on Römerstrasse. Joseph School was officially recognized 10 years later . The gym with stage was completed as early as 1910 . After being confirmed as a newly designed lyceum in 1924, the school received state recognition on July 7, 1927 as an upper lyceum with a high school diploma . In 1930 a new building was built on Römerstrasse and the first Abitur examination was carried out a year later. The school was forcibly sold to the city of Jülich in 1944 by the Nazi regime and closed. The school building was destroyed in the bombing raid on October 8, 1944. In 1945 the school was bought back and reopened on November 16. The Aachen bishop Johannes Joseph van der Velden inaugurated the new school chapel in 1950. In 1965, the construction of the upper level of the women's high school , which from 1966 was called grammar school , began. The construction of the girls' high school began in 1969. The new building was inaugurated in 1973. On January 24th, 2009 the MGJ was officially recognized as a European school, of which there are only two in the Düren district, namely the MGJ and the high school at Wirteltor Düren .

School board

On January 1, 1972, the sponsorship association for independent schools from Cologne took over the school sponsorship . According to the school's website, “some of the members” of the support group are members of Opus Dei .

Goals of the MGJ

  • Catholic education . In order to achieve this goal, qualified priests are provided by Opus Dei for school pastoral care and religious instruction.
