Director of Studies ( StD ) is an official title in higher education in Germany . As a civil servant , a director of studies belongs to the career of the higher service ( grade A 15 ). The corresponding designation for employed teachers in Bavaria is Study Director in Employment (StD i. BV) .

Announcement of job positions

The director of studies represents the second promotion office in the higher education service ( grammar schools , comprehensive schools and vocational schools ) after the appointment to the student council (first promotion office: senior student council ). However, this promotion is always associated with the assumption of a special function. Such functions are, for example, Permanent Deputy Headmaster (the site is partially equipped with a duty allowance), principals of smaller schools (always with exchange allowance), school technical coordinator , upper coordinator (usually reduction of Unterrichtsdeputats), multiple Managers , Fachschaft conductor or multiple conductors of one or more Fachschaften or as a pedagogical supervisor for certain grades or as a trainer for trainee lawyers. At vocational schools, department heads or heads of school-wide staff units (e.g. organizational development, teaching development) are study directors. The names and areas of responsibility vary from state to state. At Hamburg grammar schools there is a coordinator for each school level and a fourth coordinator for didactic advice, public relations, professional orientation, etc. Heads of study seminars or centers for teacher training are usually study directors.

You are not automatically promoted to a job. Functional positions are advertised like all positions that interested teachers can apply for. Applicants must then prove their qualifications for this position. The selection is based on “performance, suitability and ability”, as is usual in civil service.

The applicant does not have to be a senior student councilor in all federal states. In Rhineland-Palatinate, for example, all teachers in the higher service career group who have a scheduled service period of at least four years can apply for a position. If a student councilor is intended to fill the position in the selection process based on his qualifications, the position will initially be assigned to him on a provisional basis; if he is given appropriate probation, he will be promoted one year later to senior student adviser and another year later to director of studies. However, this does not apply to all federal states, as the transport may a. also depends on public finances. Waiting for a promotion after taking office can easily take several years. Since the senior student council is an office that has to be passed through on a regular basis, it cannot be skipped.

The next promotion office is the Oberstudiendirektor (OStD).

Situation in Bavaria

At Bavarian grammar schools, the position of the permanent deputy headmaster is linked to a pensionable (Art. 12 BayBeamtVG) official allowance. This official allowance establishes a separate status office (Art. 34 BayBesG), i. H. that a director of studies with an official allowance has a higher status office than a director of studies. The permanent deputy of the school principal can thus fulfill his role as superior vis-à-vis the other study directors at the school without violating the prohibition of distance. In Bavaria, this interim position is awarded by a special official certificate. The permanent deputy head of the school is thus in a higher status office than a department head, an employee of the school management or a seminar teacher.

Historical name

In southern Germany, the official designation “ high school professor” was used for the office until the 1970s . The same applied to the selection process as to the director of studies. Today the relevant officials are retired.

In Austria, the term “professor” is still the general term used for teachers in higher schools.
