Selgersdorf is a district of Jülich in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

To the north lie Altenburg and Jülich-Süd with the Bundeswehr system repair plant and the Jülich research center (Waldstrasse-Leo-Brandt-Strasse) and Lorsbeck . To the west across the Rur is Schophoven , part of the municipality of Inden . Selgersdorf is surrounded by the lignite opencast mines Hambach in the east and Inden II in the west. These opencast mines are operated by RWE Power AG. The smallest district of the city of Jülich, Daubenrath, and the Kirchholzer Hof further south are located directly on the edge of the forest. In the south is Krauthausen (Niederzier) , which was also part of the city of Jülich until the municipal reorganization in 1973, now the municipality of Niederzier.
history
Like many rural settlements in the region, Selgersdorf is likely to have its origins as a village in Franconian times. But there are also a few things that speak for the Romans since a fragment of a stone inscription from Altenburg was found in the area of the Hambach opencast mine. Perhaps the abundance of fish in the then widely ramified Rur was the reason for staying. In connection with fishing rights, Selgersdorf was first mentioned in a document as SALECHENBRUOCH on Friday, July 25th, 973. In 973 Altenburg is also mentioned "in burgina". A church in SALECHINDORP is first mentioned in 1225 ; this shows the rapid growth of the village. From 1283 to 1312, the village is mentioned in church documents under the names SALGENDORP and SALKINDORF . At this point in time, the village with Altenburg, Daubenrath, Krauthausen, Hambach (partially), Kirchholzer Hof, the farms in Dohr, Lorsbeck and Viehöfen and with properties that came close to the city of Jülich must have been of great interest to the clergy, so that the St. Gereon Monastery in Cologne "incorporated" the parish. 1324 the place is mentioned as SAYLGENDORPE in a church document when a new priest was introduced. SALCHENDORP stood on a bell cast in 1475. Selgersdorf became a district of Jülich in 1916.
