Christoph Buchal (* 1947 ) is a German physicist and non-fiction author .

biography

Buchal studied physics at the Technical University of Braunschweig , the Technical University of Munich and the University of Cologne , obtained his diploma in 1973 and was awarded a thesis in 1976 with a thesis on the attenuation and dispersion of first sound in 3He-4He mixtures [He-He mixtures] near Tλ [ T] PhD. He works as a scientist at Forschungszentrum Jülich and is professor of physics at the University of Cologne. He lives in the Jülich district of Barmen .

research

Buchal has been working at Forschungszentrum Jülich since 1976; he was a visiting scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1985 to 1986 and in 1993 at AT&T Bell Laboratories . His scientific work covers various areas of solid state physics and has led to around 200 original papers, numerous patents and book contributions in the fields of low temperature physics , Mössbauer effect , magnetism , superconductivity , ferroelectricity , nonlinear optics , femtosecond physics , integrated optics and nanoelectronics . For many years, Buchal held the world record for the lowest temperatures (38 µK above absolute zero) and discovered the superconductivity of the element rhodium at 325 µK.

He has been a member of the board of the ENERGIE working group of the German Physical Society (DPG) since 2014

Popular scientific activity

Since 2008, Buchal has focused on conveying socially relevant, physical topics in school and adult education. In addition to his lectures at the University of Cologne, he gives numerous lectures for the public and at schools with a focus on climate and energy. He works on a voluntary basis for the youth education center Science College Overbach in Jülich. In 2014 he was awarded the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Senior Professorship for his services to teacher training and for his school-related non-fiction books.

“In recognition of his achievements in conveying physical content to the public, school, university” he was awarded the Robert Wichard Pohl Prize in 2016.
