Mersch ( Luxembourgish Miersch ) is a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the capital of the canton of Mersch .

Geographical location

The municipality of Mersch is located in Gutland , in the Alzette valley north of the capital.

The 50 hectare area between the railway line and Alzette, on which the slaughterhouse and the old agrocenter still stand today, is to be redesigned.

Mersch has an express train stop on the Luxembourg Northern Railway . At the railway station Mersch also regional trains to Belgium .

  • In Pettingen there are the ruins of an old moated castle that can be visited.
  • In Mersch there is an obelisk on the Kronenberg (lux. Krounebierg ) , which is supposed to indicate the center of the Grand Duchy. Erected as a national monument to mark the 100th anniversary of Luxembourg's independence, it was torn down during World War II and rebuilt after the war. A section of the original monument (in the form of a column) can still be viewed on site.
  • Schönfels Castle in the town of the same name, which belonged to the Palatine-Luxembourg noble family Schliederer von Lachen from the 16th to the 18th century .

Culture

The Lycée Ermesinde has been located in Mersch since 2005 , and its pilot status is attracting attention throughout the country. There is also a regionally important cultural center, called the Kulturhaus , in Mersch , as well as the seat of the National Literature Center , the Center National de Littérature . The children's and youth book fair KIBUM Mersch takes place there at the beginning of each year . Mersch has a public library with an integrated internet room , the Mierscher Lieshaus .

Industrial history

The high-pressure gas fittings manufacturer Rotarex (also) goes back to the Ceodeux carbon dioxide factory in Mersch around 1922.
